Has Your Doctor Received Drug Company Money?

Drug companies have long kept secret details of the payments they make to doctors for promoting their drugs. But seven companies have begun posting names and compensation on the Web, some as the result of legal settlements. ProPublica compiled these disclosures, totaling $258 million, into a single database that allows patients to search for their doctor. Receiving payments isn’t necessarily wrong, but it does raise ethical issues.

Top Earners:
384 doctors and other health providers have received at least $100,000 from drug companies in 2009 and early 2010, according to our research.

The Classiest e-cards on The Web

Back in the year 2000, Jacquie Lawson, an English artist living in the picturesque village of Lurgashall in Southern England, created an animated Christmas card featuring her dog and cats, and her 15th-century cottage, and sent it to a few friends for their amusement. Those friends sent the e-card to others, and within weeks Jacquie was inundated with requests from all over the world to design more e-cards. In February 2002 she teamed up with a few friends and family members to create jacquielawson.com.

This woman is enormously talented. What a gift! Don

Five tips for getting rid of crapware

Crapware is software you didn’t ask for and do not want on your computer. Some generic examples are:

  •     Store or brand utilities
  •     Trialware (software free for a period, then pay or lose the program)
  •     Toolbars (menu bars at the top of your screen that take up space)
  •     ISP (Internet Service Provider) - associated utilities
  •     Time-limited antivirus software (again free for a period, then pay or lose the program)

Why is it there, then? PC makers cash in big time, that’s why. Software vendors pay top dollar to get their trialware loaded on OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer).

Then their products are right there in front of you on your new computer.

Facebook: Protect Yourself

Facebook has had security issues. There are settings on Facebook that will keep most of your information private. Make them as strict as possible.

Facebook Settings
  • Click Account
  • Click Privacy Settings
  • In the Applications and Websites section, click Edit Settings
  • Select Edit Settings next to Applications You Use
  • Adjust each application individually.
  • Click Edit Settings next to an app name to bring up its options.
  • Specify the information that an app can access.
Some apps require certain information to access your basic information or your photos. If an app requires access to certain information, it will specify that.

While you are at Settings you can remove apps.
  • Look for “Remove unwanted or spammy applications.”
  • Click Remove to delete the undesired apps.
Below that you'll see “Turn off all platform applications.” This option freezes communication from apps to users. Some apps look for information on users' friends. You can adjust what you’re friends' apps are able to find out about you.
Look for “Info accessible through your friends.”
    * Click on Edit Settings next to it.
    * Uncheck anything you don’t want to share with your friends’ apps.
